Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)

The ability to communicate is such an important part of life. For some, however, their speech communication disability hinders them to speak to whomever they choose, whenever and wherever they want to. An augmentative or alternative communication (AAC) device from Cadan Assistive Technologies can help. Our AAC products bridge that gap between silence, isolation, and independence, and having a life interwoven with other people through communication and shared understanding.

What is AAC?

AAC or augmentative and alternative communication is the term used to describe all forms of communication, with the exception of oral speech. AAC helps people with speech impairment to express their thoughts and ideas. Some individuals need it because of a condition that has been existent since birth, such as hearing impairment, autism, cerebral palsy, or a learning disability. Others who have lost their ability to communicate due to stroke, brain injury, or ALS, may benefit from AAC as well. There are two types of AAC systems: unaided and aided. Unaided systems, which include sign language, do not require special equipment. Aided systems, on the other hand, use books, charts, as well as AAC devices to help people express themselves—and that’s what we’re offering at Cadan Assistive Technologies.
